President's Corner

Hello All...First I would like to tell you a bit about myself if you don't
know me already. My name is Jon Vogt. I am the 2007 President for the
Florissant Valley Jaycees. I was born, raised and have lived in Florissant
all my life. I attended Hazelwood West High and Graduated in 1995. Having
grown up in North County I have become a big supporter of the community
itself and all of its residents. I strongly believe that community is
only as strong as its residents and that they should be as active as
possible. Five years ago I was approached by a few Jaycees about joining the
organization. Now, I hadn't really haven't really heard of the Jaycees but
the more the talked the more it caught my interest. I showed up to a few
meetings, participated in projects attended different trainings and got to
meet all kinds of great people. I became a director a year later, Management
VP and Individual VP the following years, and now El Presidente. This
organization has helped me grow into a person that years ago I didn't see
myself becoming or knowing. It offers so much knowledge to young people in
so many areas and levels, which is why it makes it different from all the
other organizations out there. Plus, as a bonus you get to work and serve
the community that you love, raise money for charity, improve your business
and networking skills and just become a better person. This is going to be
and has already been a exciting year for this chapter. I am very blessed to
have great members and a strong board of directors to assist me in
everything we want to accomplish this year and also, to pave the way for our
future members. Please take time out to learn more about us.(I guess if
your reading this your on the right track). If you have any questions feel
free to contact me at jv259@msn.com.The last line of the Jaycee creed is that
"Service to humanity is the best work of life". How can you not agree?
Now, I know my section is the most important but, keep reading to find out
what all the VPs have going on in their areas........... Talk to you all
soon.
Take care & God Bless, Jon

Individual Development

Wednesday, March 7, 2007 How To Sell Items on Ebay The one and only Dan Flayer will be our guest speaker. That should be reason enough to come to the meeting . . . but if you want more he is going to teach us how to post items and sell them on Ebay. This is a topic people have been talking about for a while now so I went to the only expert I know. Bring your friends, family and questions. Dan will be able to tell us what might be worth selling and what may not sell well. We all know he has years of experience in selling on Ebay and he is going to share his knowledge. If you have a specific topic you would like to have a speaker on just let me know and I will try to arrange one for you. Glenn Crowell IDVP - Florissant Valley 314-496-3692 Glenn Crowell

Community Development

For anyone who is new to the website, let me give you some information about my area. The Community Development area is just that, working with the community. This is the area of the organization where we give back to the community and assist individuals outside of the organization. How do we do this? Good question. We do this through projects we run throughout the year, from Child Identification programs, Easter Egg Hunts, Movie Nights at a local retirement home, sponsoring a Queen Candidate, Kids fishing derby, Relay for Life, Access Day at the State Fair, Adopt a Soldier, Adopt a Family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, Monthly Cable Show, and much more. To stay updated please check back on a regular basis and we will give more information about when these projects will take place, where you can help and be involved. As always we have some great upcoming projects in March and April. Starting with March, we are checking with Hazelwood school district to verify they are running their annual school program. In the past we have been utilized in several ways; running a small version of our Child Identification program and Bar B Queuing hot dogs all day. We try to give them assistance wherever they need help. We are also trying to set up another Movie night at the retirement home with the Bridgeton Jaycees. We did this program at the end of last year and it was such a hit we are just working to set up a date. Last but certainly not least is our monthly cable show. This month’s show will be our Valley of Flowers Queen Candidate and the Easter Egg Hunt. Jaycee TV airs every Wednesday at 6:30pm on Charter Communications Channel 18 in St. Louis County. In April we have one of our biggest projects of the year, the Easter Egg Hunt. We run our Easter Egg Hunt a little different than most, instead of having 500 – 600 kids run out and over each other all at once, we rope off an area have 6 different colored eggs and send groups of 50 kids in at a time to find the eggs and turn them in at the pavilion for prizes. This makes the project safe and a lot more fun for the youngest that do not always have the chance to out run the bigger kids. We also have several other things going on, the Florissant Fire trucks come, face painting, and pictures with the Easter Bunny and Easter Duck. In past years we have had anywhere from 350 to almost 700 kids. The weather that day is the deciding factor on how large the crowd is. The date is April 7, starting at 10:00 am at Bangert Park in Florissant; they begin lining up around 9:00am. We will be up front again this year at the pavilion 1, by the Tank. Also in April we will be working with the Missouri Jaycees for set up at Wonderland Camp. Wonderland Camp is a summer camp for mentally and physically handicap people, sponsored by the Missouri Jaycees. Every year in April Jaycee Chapters go down the first two weekends and get the camp set up for the upcoming season. Our cable show in April will revolve around the upcoming Valley of Flowers and membership with Brian Buchholz. If you have any ideas that you would like to see, or if there is a project you would like to be involved in or find out more information about let us know. We love new ideas and can always use more people involved in any project we do. Mike Ackermann Community Development Vice President 2007

Chairmans Corner

Hi hopefully most of you know me by now but for those of you who do not - my name is Holly Kosick and I am the 2007 Chairman of the Board for Florissant Valley. I just thought I’d take a minute to tell you a little bit more about myself. I have been a Jaycee for almost 6 years and have served as a Director, Community VP, Membership VP, Treasurer, State Director and President. This year I am also serving on the Missouri Jaycee team as District Director for Region 5 District 1. Outside of the Jaycees, I am employed by the State of Missouri as a Purchasing Manager for three psychiatric facilities in the St. Louis area. Although the Jaycees, are very near and dear to me, my heart and soul belong to my niece and nephew, 6 and 4 respectively. Unfortunately, I don’t get to see them very often as they live in Maine where my “baby” brother is stationed in the Coast Guard. Right now the only “children” I have are the four legged kind – Cash, Cream and Pandora (all cats but I would love to have a dog if I was home more). I have pretty much lived in Florissant my whole life except for the few years in Columbia where I went to college (ok, we did live in St. Peters when I was two for about a year and a half but I don’t remember it). I am glad that I have been a part of this chapter and look forward to serving as Chairman this year. The Board has set several goals this year and so have I. One of these goals this year as C.O.B is to support President Jon and help the current Board accomplish the goals they have set for themselves. To me this is so important to show support to the current Board and President. The current Board has attainable goals that will help keep this chapter going for several years to come but without support these goals can easily be swept away. One thing I plan on doing to support the Board is to consistently let them know that I am here to lend a hand and periodically check in to see if they need my assistance. Being an active volunteer versus a passive volunteer helps any board tremendously. My other goal for this year is to mention the Jaycees in a positive way to at least one new person a day whether or not they are of age and whether or not I think they will join just to get the word out. Word of mouth is a very powerful tool. Many people in business can testify that it can make you or break you. Joe Girard, dubbed as the “World’s Greatest Salesman” estimated the average person knows about 250 people and even though not all 250 you know will be eligible for what you’re selling (in this case the Jaycees), those 250 people each know an average of 250 people and some of them will be eligible. But it is hard to sell something when no one knows what it is you are selling. Even if you never actually “recruit” anyone, when you spread the word you can start something akin to the “domino effect”. The greatest example I can think of is Jesus’ disciples, they had no t.v. or radio, it took weeks to send communications and in a few short years they were able to convert thousand’s to Christianity. Today much of the world is Christian. Ok, we may not be able to have the same effect as a major religion, but, it is still unbelievable to me how many people in the St. Louis area have never heard of the Jaycees even though it is the birthplace. People nowadays can be so very private, so private that we don’t even know if who our neighbors are. We tend to segregate ourselves, we often do not involve our Jaycee friends in our outside life and our outside friends are often not involved in our “Jaycee life”. We also sometimes fail to mention the Jaycees to people we think are over the age limit even though they may be able to connect us to many Jaycee-age people. I realize I have been guilty of this as anyone else but I have also come to realize it is never too late to change, as Oprah says, “This is the year for change!” If you are interested in the Florissant Valley Jaycees or in the Jaycees in general you can contact me at hskflovalley@lycos.com .
